First pair at 10.5 standard width was just a little bit too small, too tight in the front . Sent back and had a pair of size 11 in no time. The size 11 does have a more comfortable fit, bit tend to be a bit loose near the back. With these types of shoes, I always wear thicker socks.I also experienced rubbing others mentioned on the back of my foot just above my Achilles.I put a couple of wide band-aid bandages in the back of the shoe. One running from the top down and another across, positioned near the top edge. And, another bandsge on my foot/lower leg where it was rubbing. Just on the left shoe, no issues on right side. After about two weeks and wearing them just about every day, they are breaking in and softening up.I would probably have given them a 3.5 if possible. I love the look and fit of the shoe, but without any tongue padding it isn't something I can comfortably wear for long periods. I originally bought these because they are roomy enough to fit orthotics.I was disappointed in the laces. The flat laces just don't hold up and I will be replacing them with round ones before long. All in all, a well made shoe that looks good and fits well, but probably not one most can wear for extended periods. These boots are comfortable and do fit front to back nicely. The only drawback is the toe box is slightly narrow. I bought the 9.5D so may need to get the wide ones next time. I do love the leather and walking in these is nice once I loosened up the strings; did this because they are not worn in yet and the back was rubbing my legs too much.Although these appeared to be chucka boots, both the top and bottom leathers were far too soft to provide good foot and ankle support. The sole was the only outstanding feature but, by itself, it could make the shoe practical. Because of the soft leather, the shoe felt far too loose, and my foot kept sliding inside of it. Even adding orthopedic pads could not make these shoes a wearable proposition. These New Balance boots are good looking and well made, but there's one major deficiency. The top of the boots have no soft collar, and consequently the stiff leather rubs against the back of the wearer's ankle, causing a painful abrasion. Thick socks help to a small degree, but the boots aren't suitable for wear with everyday socks. The overall design is appealing, but the practical effect is uncomfortable. I hope that the problem will diminish with a "break-in" period, but candidly I should have returned them before wearing them for a couple of days.I used these shoes for work... I my job is very demanding, physically and mentally, and throughout the day it is my feet that pay the price. Since purchasing these shoes... they fit well, but it diggs into the back of my ankle. Gave me blisters... I use a bandaid everyday to protect myself from the discomfort ... but after some time, it worked itself outWore these to work, and they were a bit hard on the feet after a few hrs. I stand for Mos tof the day, and there isn't much support on the insole. Won't purchase these again.Fit great. Nice width.Just be aware, heel collar fits tight to the point where it's uncomfortable to sit, let alone have to drive in L.A. traffic while your ankles are being strangled.Once broken in they're great walking boots. Look professional while looking almost like sneakers.
